Contreras, Taylor spark Brewers to 7-3 win over Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP) — William Contreras homered and Tyrone Taylor scored twice and drove in a run as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 on Tuesday night.

Milwaukee stopped a two-game skid and reduced its magic number to clinch the NL Central to six.

Richie Palacios homered for the last-place Cardinals, who were eliminated from playoff contention.

Contreras’ solo homer in the third snapped a 16-inning scoring drought for Milwaukee.

The Brewers opened the fourth with four straight doubles. Willy Adames, Josh Donaldson, Taylor and Sal Frelick all doubled and scored to give Milwaukee a 5-2 lead.

Taylor also walked twice and scored on Andruw Monasterio's sacrifice fly in the eighth. Contreras scored on Adames' single in the ninth to pad the Brewers’ lead.

Colin Rea (6-6), recalled Monday from Triple-A Nashville, allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out two.

Trevor Megill served as the opener for the Brewers, giving up two runs in one inning. Hoby Milner, Abner Uribe, Joel Payamps and Andrew Chafin combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

Drew Rom (1-3) allowed five runs in 3 1/3 innings as the Cardinals had their two-game winning streak snapped. He gave up six hits, walked two and struck out three.

Alec Burleson doubled home Lars Nootbaar, stole third and scored on Nolan Arenado's sacrifice fly to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead in the first. Palacios added a solo home run in the fifth.

Wainwright gets 200th win as the Cardinals blank the Brewers 1-0

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright earned his 200th win, pitching seven innings of four-hit ball in a vintage performance as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Monday night.

It was the longest outing this season for the 42-year-old Wainwright (5-11), who struck out three and walked two. He has won consecutive starts — both against first-place teams — after going 0-10 with a 10.72 ERA over his previous 11 games between June 24 and Sept. 7.

The right-hander became the 38th pitcher in NL history to reach 200 wins, and the 24th major leaguer to achieve the milestone since 2000.

Willson Contreras homered off Freddy Peralta (12-9) in the fourth. Milwaukee lost its second straight and its magic number to clinch the NL Central remained at seven. The Brewers hold a six-game lead over the Chicago Cubs with 12 to play.

John King induced a double play in the eighth and Ryan Helsley worked 1 1/3 innings for his 12th save in 16 opportunities.

Wainwright got Carlos Santana to ground into a pair of double plays and left to a standing ovation from the crowd of 33,176 after pitching around a leadoff single by Mark Canha in the seventh.

Wainwright’s first strikeout of the game, against Rowdy Tellez, was the 2,200th of his career. His last two punchouts moved him past David Wells for 65th on the all-time list.

Contreras lined a sinker from Peralta just inside the left-field foul pole for his 20th home run of the season.

Peralta gave up four hits in six innings and struck out six.

Sal Frelick had two singles for the Brewers and robbed Tommy Edman of an extra-base hit with a running catch in deep center field. Frelick caught the ball on a full sprint and held on after crashing into the wall.

Nationals beat NL Central-leading Brewers 2-1 in 11 innings to avoid sweep

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joey Meneses hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Washington Nationals defeated the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Sunday to prevent a three-game sweep.

Luis García homered early for the Nationals, who are last in the NL East.

With right-hander Thyago Vieira (0-1) on for his second inning of relief in the 11th, automatic runner CJ Abrams advanced to third base on Lane Thomas’ flyout and scored on Meneses’ third sacrifice fly of the season.

With runners at the corners in the bottom half, Robert Garcia (1-2) got pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez to ground into a game-ending double play to secure his first major league win.

“He smoked the ball, and it was a great play by the first baseman,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “Tip your cap to that, that was a great play. Then he made a great play to throw home as well, not throw to second.”

Michael Chavis took over at first after being inserted as a pinch runner for starting first baseman Dominic Smith in the ninth.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said he has confidence in Chavis to make the big play.

“We can't do that unless we know that Chavis takes his work over at first base and those ground balls,” Martinez said. “Those are the things that he does. So, we were able to pinch run for Dom knowing that he can go over there and play first base and play it well. He's done it in his career. For me, it was a no-brainer.”

Garcia also pitched out of trouble in the 10th, holding the Brewers scoreless after they loaded the bases with one out.

Milwaukee had runners at second and third with two outs in the ninth before Kyle Finnegan struck out Andruw Monasterio.

The Nationals had a chance to take the lead in the eighth. But with runners at the corners, Andrew Chafin entered and threw one pitch, getting the speedy Abrams to ground into an inning-ending double play.

“That was a tough spot,” Counsell said. “Abrams is a very difficult player to double up. We caught a break, hit a groundball at somebody, we were playing in and we were able to turn it.”

Hunter Harvey took over for Nationals starter Patrick Corbin and retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth.

Corbin allowed three hits over five scoreless innings before the Brewers manufactured a run in the sixth to tie the game. Mark Canha singled, stole second, advanced on a sacrifice and scored on Carlos Santana’s sacrifice fly.

“Good to see us come away with this win,” Corbin said. “Just credit to the bullpen. They've been pitching a lot for us and pitching well. Good to see them finish it out.”

García homered in the second to snap a shutout streak of 22 2/3 innings for Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff.

García contributed a nice running catch with his back to the infield in the first. He singled and stole second in the fifth.

Woodruff allowed three hits — two by García — over six innings and struck out six.

Packers blow double-digit 4th quarter lead, fall 25-24 in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) — Younghoe Koo booted a 25-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining and rookie Bijan Robinson turned in another dynamic performance Sunday, rallying the Atlanta Falcons to a 25-24 victory over Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers.

Robinson rushed for 124 yards on 19 carries and hauled in four catches for another 48 yards, showing why the Falcons (2-0) selected him No. 8 pick in the draft even though running backs aren't supposed to go that high anymore.

The Packers (1-1) squandered a 24-12 lead and three more touchdown passes from Love, who now has a half-dozen scoring throws in his first two games as Aaron Rodgers' replacement in Titletown.

Atlanta's young quarterback, Desmond Ridder, bootlegged for a 6-yard touchdown on fourth-and-4 with just under 12 minutes remaining.

Then it was Ridder and Robinson teaming up for two more drives that set up field goals by Koo, including a 39-yarder with 8:13 remaining.

Robinson had 56 yards rushing and 27 yards receiving in his NFL debut, a 24-10 victory over the Panthers.

He was even better against the Packers.

Love wasn't too shabby, either, especially considering the injury-depleted offense that was around him. He completed 14 of 25 passes for 151 yards and hooked up with a pair of rookies on his three TDs.

But the Packers offense dried up in the final quarter, allowing the Falcons to move to 2-0 for only the 11th time in franchise history.

Love went to second-round pick Jayden Reed for touchdowns of 10 and 9 yards — the first scores of the receiver's young career.

Love also connected with Dontayvion Wicks on a 32-yard touchdown that gave the fifth-round pick his first TD as a pro.

The Packers were missing three injured starters on offense and lost another during the game, leaving Love to play behind a patched-together line.

Koo kicked four field goals to offset a missed extra point that left the Falcons down 10-9 at halftime.

INJURY REPORT

Packers: FB Aaron Jones (hamstring), WR Christian Watson (hamstring) and LT David Bakhtiari (knee) didn't dress, and Green Bay lost another offensive starter when left guard Elgton Jenkins went down in the first half with a knee injury.

Falcons: No injuries were reported during the game, but the inactive list included a surprise. RB Cordarrelle Patterson (thigh) did not play for the second straight week even though he was not included on the team’s final injury report.

Canha's grand slam in 8th gives NL Central-leading Brewers a 9-5 victory over Nationals

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Mark Canha hit a tiebreaking grand slam off Kyle Finnegan with two outs in the eighth inning and the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers beat the Washington Nationals 9-5 on Saturday night.

The Brewers bounced back after blowing a four-run lead and won for the 13th time in their last 15 home games.

Washington had rallied to tie the game on Jake Alu’s two-out bloop hit off Joel Payamps (6-4) in the top of the eighth after trailing 5-1 in the sixth against All-Star Corbin Burnes.

The Brewers responded in the bottom half of the inning.

Tyrone Taylor started the rally with a one-out double off Finnegan (7-5). Sal Frelick followed with an infield single, though shortstop CJ Abrams’ diving stop prevented Taylor from advancing. One out later, Carlos Santana fell behind 1-2 in the count before working his way to a walk that loaded the bases.

Canha then sent a first-pitch splitter into the left-field stands for his second career grand slam.

Taylor also homered for Milwaukee. Frelick and Canha each went 3 for 5.

Luis García hit a solo shot and Joey Meneses went 3 for 5 for Washington.

Burnes was making his first appearance since pitching eight innings of no-hit ball Sunday in a game the Brewers eventually lost 4-3 to the New York Yankees in 13 innings. After breezing for much of the night, Burnes allowed three runs, three hits and three walks in the sixth as the Nationals got back into the game.

Meneses and Carter Kieboom hit two-out RBI singles to cut Milwaukee’s lead to 5-3, then Luis García drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Nationals within one run. Third-base umpire Brian O’Nora ruled that García checked his swing on a low 3-2 pitch.

Washington’s tying rally in the eighth began with Meneses’ leadoff single. Michael Chavis, who pinch-ran for Meneses, advanced to third on García’s two-out single to right and scored on Alu’s single to left.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Brewers OF Christian Yelich, who had missed six straight games with a sore lower back before returning Friday night, was out of the starting lineup again Saturday. “Essentially, just watching him play yesterday and talking to him this afternoon when he came in, I just don't think we're at 100% yet,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said before the game. “I think we should wait till we get there. And so we'll see when that is. I'm hopeful and optimistic that it's soon. We didn't see it yesterday, and so we'll just play it day by day from here on out.”

Brewers get back-to-back home runs in 5-3 win over Washington, push NL Central lead to 5.5 games

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Carlos Santana hit two solo homers and William Contreras added a three-run shot as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 5-3 on Friday night.

Milwaukee began the day with a 4 1/2-game lead in the NL Central over the Chicago Cubs, who played at Arizona.

Santana homered to cap a four-run fifth and opened the eighth with his 21st homer for his 1,000th career RBI. Santana, acquired just before the deadline from Pittsburgh, has nine homers in 39 games with Milwaukee.

Wade Miley (8-4) allowed three runs and four extra-base hits in the first inning, but did not give up another hit until a two-out single in the sixth by Carter Kieboom, the last batter he faced. Miley struck out three and walked two.

Trevor Megill followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, Abner Uribe tossed a perfect eighth, and Devin Williams struck out the side in the ninth for his 35th save in 39 opportunities.

The Brewers erased a 3-0 deficit in the fifth on consecutive homers by Contreras and Santana off Jake Irvin (3-6). Rowdy Tellez walked to open and Christian Yelich drew a two-out walk. Contreras then tied it with his 16th, driving the first pitch 456 feet to left-center. Santana followed with a homer to right, chasing Irvin.

Irvin allowed four runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings, but walked five in a 102-pitch outing.

The Nationals tagged Miley for three runs in the first inning on a homer and three doubles. With one out, Lane Thomas lined a solo homer to left, his 25th. Joey Meneses followed with a double, and Kieboom and Ildemaro Vargas added consecutive RBI doubles with two outs.
