Badgers QB Tyler Van Dyke headed to the transfer portal
Wisconsin will have a different starting quarterback to open a season for a fourth straight year following Tyler Van Dyke’s decision to enter the transfer portal.
The new was first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN.
Van Dyke started the first three games for the Badgers, throwing for 422 yards and one touchdown. But he was lost for the year with a torn ACL on the first drive of game No. 3 against Alabama.
There were reports during the season that Van Dyke intended to stick around Madison for one more year, but the uncertainty around his recovery and when he’d be back on the field left Wisconsin is a tough position. Coach Luke Fickell said last Wednesday that he was slated to have a conversation with Van Dyke later in the day. That conversation, obviously, led to Van Dyke’s departure.
With their preferred starter for 2024 heading to the portal, the Badgers are once again looking for someone new to lead the offense that will now be coordinated by Jeff Grimes. Of the current scholarship QBs on the roster, only two — redshirt freshman Mabrey Mettauer and true freshman Carter Smith — have the running ability that Grimes likes in his quarterback. That likely means Wisconsin will have to go to the portal once again to find its next starter.
Van Dyke was the third quarterback in as many years to start a season opener for the Badgers, following Graham Mertz in 2022 and Tanner Mordecai in 2023.
