First baseman Mike Carp, recently designated for assignment by Seattle, could be a target for the injury-depleted Brewers, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reported Monday.
Carp, 26, hit .213/.312/.341 (88 OPS+) for Seattle in 59 games in 2012, a disappointing and injury-wracked season for the lefty. Carp hit .276/.326/.466 (125 OPS+) with 12 home runs in 79 games for the Mariners in 2011, his best professional season.
Brewers first baseman Corey Hart is expected to be out until mid-May with a knee injury. His assumed replacement, Mat Gamel, suffered a torn ACL in early spring training workouts and is expected to miss the rest of the season. The Brewers are evaluating internal options (including Taylor Green, Alex Gonzalez and Bobby Crosby, among others), but GM Doug Melvin confirmed to McCalvy he has called the Mariners about Carp.
The Mariners have until Friday to trade Carp, otherwise he is likely to be claimed by a team off waivers. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said he expects the first baseman to be traded within the next 24-48 hours.
